Innovation as motivation - Part 2 Next2OEM

Development of a digitized and automated value chain for Next2OEM wiring harness production.

With the ever-increasing complexity of modern vehicles and the growing demand for customized solutions, the challenge of making production more efficient and flexible is also growing.

That is why we are supporting the “Next2OEM” research project, which aims to automate and digitize wiring harness production. The goal is to accelerate production processes and improve quality.

From the assembly of the cable harness – assembly of the cables, crimping, and installation – to complete integration into the vehicle body. A robot takes over the assembly of the cable harness in the center console and its installation in the car.

The consortium for this project includes partners from across the entire value chain. This enables a holistic automation solution for all process steps: from connector manufacturing and cable assembly, shaping, cable protection, testing, and logistics to the assembly of the wiring harness in the vehicle, using the example of a self-sufficient center console wiring harness. The prototype complete system will be validated and optimized for practical suitability at the consortium leader @AUDI AG.

Aim of the research project: The project aims to relocate wiring harness production back to Germany. This reshoring will enable us to benefit from shorter delivery times and lower costs in the future, as well as stronger local cooperation. We will also be promoting the regional economy, creating jobs, and improving the quality of our products through faster adaptation processes. In this way, we are not only boosting efficiency, but also the innovative strength and competitiveness of the industry.

The digital and automated future of Next2OEM wiring harness production is already a reality today. We are delighted to be driving forward the digitalization of production through research projects such as this.
